As for being an actual threat, it will probably be only to the type of designers populating known platforms offering spec work, cheap design on an hourly basis, and designers that are now filling in the gap for having something visual, quickly and at a low cost.

What is obvious to me after soon to be 20 years as a designer, is that I have yet to see a non-designer stakeholder that knows exactly HOW and WHAT needs to be done at the level of the ‘true’ designer (in terms of design), so for the designer that is the ‘non-decorator’ type, it will be yet another opportunity. For that kind of designer, AI won’t be a big peril, it will be a god way of augmenting their own creativity and capability.

For someone like me who has seen a big part of the dawn of the digital version of this occupation, since the late 90s early 2000’s as a teenager tinkering with design in Corel Draw, and then the late 2000’s and through all of 2010s working a designer and consultant, taking on gradually most of the available tools of the trade from Photoshop and Illustrator to the later, interface oriented tools like Sketch, XD and more recently Figma, all while getting things done on my projects at Supersymmetric. Any form of AI, AI Agent, LLM etc. coming, will merely be another way of making my work easier as it happened with each tooling ‘upgrade’ that I experienced ‘on the job’. So the dawn of AI will more likely see the end of Adobe and other behemoths trying to monopolize design production software.

It will also probably mean that it’ll be harder for juniors to get into the field and build the experience needed for being a good design professional and to acquire the needed acumen to be able to discriminate between good design and bad design, between what’s useful and not useful, between what’s needed and not needed, as in general a junior designer starts out in his career more often than not by doing the menial tasks, with oversight from senior peers, tasks that are starting to be done faster and cheaper with some sort of AI tool by someone more experienced.

With the flood of low-quality material being put out by AI and all the noise and static created by it, the role of a good designer with a trained eye who can sift through it all, a designer that knows HOW and WHAT needs to be done, will stay relevant.

In that sense, we’ll soon be more likely witnessing a reverse trend to what happened in tech since the early 2010, when the fast-growing need for better user experience, user interfaces and product mindsets, ‘produced’ many designers en-masse in the ‘nurseries’ of big tech which for a while seemed to be leading to a mass democratization of the trade, when in reality it was just producing enough ‘fodder’ to throw in the mouth of the ‘monster’ wanting to get everything and everyone online.

So to answer the question, is it really ‘RIP Graphic Designers’? At least to a certain segment of designers, as more easily automatable design tasks will be done by AI faster and more precisely, and most of the designers ‘produced’ by big tech in the past 10-15 years to fill execution roles whose main scope was to serve the need for design volume and productivity in the race to get everything online, it will most likely be ‘RIP’, and most likely will need to change focus and adapt.

Artwork: Andromache mourning Hector • Jacques-Louis David[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/6″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”middle” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”2%” constrain_group_1=”yes” bottom_padding=”2%” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” gradient_type=”default” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default”…

[10,9

0":"post-4158","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ai","8":"category-design
["GET
